Story

We are raising money for The CJD Support Network by walking 100km from London to Brighton on May 24th-25th 2014. 6 of our amazing friends Jack deCruz, Sam Light, Rachel Price, Emily Hogg, Jess Reed and Tammy Boughey have signed up to walk with us.

Please read our story to find out why this charity is so close to our hearts.

Our Dad, Terry George Flatt aged 54 sadly passed away on June 13th 2013. Losing somebody you love is always a terrible time but Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease makes it all the harder. CJD robs you of all of your dignity and the symptoms come quickly and progress rapidly. There are three types of CJD all resulting in slightly different symptoms. Our Dad had Sporadic CJD. Starting with severe confusion and memory loss, followed by paranoia, listlessness, hallucinations, lack of focus and hand-eye co-ordination. Once the disease progresses you are eventually unable to walk, talk or eat. The fact that makes this more unbearable is all of this happened in 5 weeks.

Our Dad was a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather and friend. He had just built a race car ready to continue pursing his greatest passion. This was definatly not his time to go and we will never know why this terrible disease chose one of the most special people in our life.

We are sharing our story with you to hopefully raise some awareness of CJD as like us before this affected our Dad it was never anything that concerned us. The goverment strongly believe they are near to finding a cure to reverse the rapid effects CJD has on people but as we all know this could take years to happen if it ever does.

We have previously raised over £6000 for the hospice that cared for him but now we would like to do something substantial to help a self funded charity The CJD Support Network. This charity was started from a lady that lost her husband to the disease. Just like us she wanted to make something good out of something so terrible. They have grown to be able to provide a 24/7 helpline to support and provide information to any family and friends and most amazingly will organise and pay for care from qualified proffesionals to help people that choose to look after the sufferers at home. As most doctors and medical professionals know limited information on CJD this is a vital support network to help you in any way needed.

Please take a look on the website and see for yourselves what they are about www.cjdsupport.net
