Story

Updated on Aug 2nd 2011 at 3:53 PM from the JustGiving API

Have that! I've finished. At 10:30am on the tenth day of the challenge I summited Ben Nevis, nine and a half days after leaving south Devon. My legs are tired but I feel great. Thanks for all your support and kind wishes. Owen.

Thanks for finding my JustGiving page.  If you don't know much about me, my current challenge or my chosen charity, then read on....

My name is Owen Mansfield.  I am a Type 1 diabetic and Chemistry Teacher, with a love of long-distance cycle touring.  In the summer of 2008 whilst planning my Land’s End to John O’Groats ride I decided to get even more out of the ride by doing it in aid of a local charity.  A friend told me about Children’s Hospice South West, and I immediately knew that it was the charity I wanted to raise money for.  So in July 2008 I set off from Land’s End, and arrived at John O’Groats just under 1000 miles later.  Some of the photos on this page are from this ride.  With the help of a lot of people I raised £2,355.11.  And now I want to do it all again….

So this summer (2011) I’m going to combine cycle-touring with hill-climbing.  The ride is pretty much the length of the UK, from where I live in South Brent in South Devon, to Fort William in north-west Scotland.  Along the way I'm going to climb the highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales.  So that's approximately 800 miles of cycling, and the ascent of Snowdon (1085m), Scafell Pike (978m) and Ben Nevis (1344m).  I will be doing the ride unsupported - i.e. carrying all my own equipment (clothes, tent, sleeping bag, etc) and hope to finish it all in 10 days.  My goal is to raise at least £5000 for CHSW.

Children's Hospice South West provide care for children who have illnesses which mean they will die before reaching adulthood.  They provide expert care for them, their parents and well siblings and this costs many millions of pounds each year. You can find out more about CHSW by clicking on the CHSW link on the left.

You probably know that donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to Children's Hospice South West and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So, think of my sore bum and tired legs, dig deep and donate now. Thank you!
