In spring 2010, I along with seven other volunteers will embark on a project to Uganda. Thanks to Cricket Without Boundaries we will be able to help raise awareness of HIV through cricket coaching.
We will be tutoring people to become coaches and delivering training sessions to the children. In these sessions we will be talking about HIV and its prevention.
So what links cricket with HIV?
The link between Sport (particularly cricket) and HIV is not an obvious one. However, sports coaches are in a unique position to impart a message of staying healthy and doing so within a fun and trusting environment. They often have the respect of those that they coach, and are not perceived in the same negative way that sometimes children perceive their teachers or a health worker. They are ideally placed to talk about the importance of staying healthy to fulfill someone's true potential, both on the field and in life generally.
I will be paying for my flights, food, visas, insurances and inoculations for the project, so it's not a jolly on you. Every penny that you so kindly donate will help to buy cricket equipment, clothing plus numerous other items for the future coaches and players in Uganda.
