My story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Steven Atkinson was just 18 months old when diagnosed with Leukaemia in 1999.
After a 3 year battle against the Blood Cancer Steven was given the all clear much to the delight of all his family, friends and School. Steven continued to visit the Royal Victoria Infermary in Newcastle for regular check ups. However Stevens story neither began in 1999 or ended 3 years later in 2002. It was clear from birth that Steven was no ordinary child, born with a Cleft Pallet and Piere Rubans Syndrome as well as a slight curviture of the spine Steven underwent surgery at a very young age to start to repair the pallet defect he was born with later having to put these staged repairs on hold whilst batteling the Leukaemia he had later been diagnosed with.
After being given the all clear for several years Steven and his family were able to start looking forward, further surgery to repair his Cleft Pallet going very well. Checks into his other ailments looking positive as time went on THEN disaster. On the evening of Saturday 17th October 2009 whilst out riding his beloved BMX with friends Steven was knocked from his bike by a young driver doing almost TWICE the speed limit in a 30MPH residential area resulting in Steven losing his life.
As a way of helping them come to terms with their tragic loss Stevens family have set up a Forget Me Not Fund through Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research to honour Stevens life. They chose this particular charity as despite being helped by many others during Stevens life this is where they personally feel they can help to make a difference and help other children and adults beat Blood Cancer.
