The Coast-to-Coast Challenge

It's over! 180 miles completed in 123hrs and 30 mins.  Unfortunately, Ian Hazzard didn't start, due to a short notice call up to Afghanistan and Sunny Sardesai withdrew after 4 days due to injury.  However, Paul Davison continued to complete the challenge.  For Paul this has been the most physically and mentally challenging undertaking he has experienced.  Paul is extremely tired with a number of blisters and aching legs!  He thanks all of you for not only your donations, but also for your words of encouragement and support.

Between 2-7 Oct 2010, Paul Davison, Ian Hazzard and Sunny Sardesai are undertaking Alfred Wainwright’s famous Coast-to-Coast walk.  The route is a remarkable 180 miles crossing from St Bees head in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s bay in North Yorkshire.  It involves 3 national parks, namely the Lake District, Peak District and North Yorkshire Moors.  Most who walk the route take between 14 and 21 days, the fastest crossing took 39 hours!  Our challenge is to complete the route in 120 hours.  This involves 5 days of 14 hours walking on average covering 35 miles per day, crossing 3 of England’s highest mountain ranges.  The rest periods are all in B+Bs.

We are undertaking this challenge in support of the Vale Wildlife Hospital in the Vale of Evesham, Gloucestershire.  The hospital focuses on the care and rehabilitation of wildlife, public education and the conservation of wildlife.  The hospital is a 24 hour operation and saves in excess of 3500 animals per year.  Vale is completely self-funded and requires donations in excess of £22,000 per month to run and this is in addition to the many volunteers who give their time freely.

£1 - £20 will buy:

Tinned pet food, wild bird seed, washing powder, kitchen roll, cotton buds, photocopy paper, envelopes, pens, tinned puppy food, minced beef, mixed corn, cat biscuits, postage stamps,
Fairy washing-up liquid, microwaveable heat mats.

£100 will buy:

Almost 3 tins of Esbilac milk replacer (£110)
One animal grasper (£90)
A carrying cage for a badger (£90)
One box of x-ray films (£90)
Food for one hedgehog for the whole winter (£100)
3 blood tests (£75)

Our aim is to raise £3000 to support the day-to-day running costs and for the purchase of essential rescue and diagnostic equipment.
