My story

I did it! On April 22nd 2012 I finished the Virgin London Marathon. It took me 5h 25mins but I am pleased to have achieved my biggest personal challenge so far - and it was for my charity Crimestoppers!

Most of you reading this will remember the rioting and looting that took place in London and across the UK in August 2011. A lot of people were affected by the riots with significant losses to property and more disturbing attacks on people including loss of human life.

What you may not know is that I was unfortunate to get caught up in the riots – my journey home from work on Monday evening took me through Lewisham in south London. To make a long story short, I ended up being stopped at a made up road block by the rioters and was forced to abandon my car and all my possession – leaving it all behind whilst running away. I was luckier than many others who got caught up in the riots in so much that I came to no physical harm – cars, mobile phones, laptops – all material stuff that can be replaced.

When you have experienced something like this, you start to think afterwards about what you could have done different (“why did I take that route?”) but you also think about what will happen next, will the police be able to find everyone involved in the riots and so on.

One of the organisations that are out there that does a lot to help resolving crime is Crimestoppers and the action I have taken as a result of what happened to me during the riots is to actively support Crimestoppers by raising money for them.

The way I will raise money for Crimestoppers is to take part in the 2012 Virgin London Marathon, this will be the first marathon I have ever run – a huge personal challenge.

I launched my campaign 6 months ahead of the race day – April 22nd 2012. This is literally from a standing start as I have never done a marathon before. 20 odd years ago I completed a ½ marathon but that is as much running I have done since then.

In my professional life, most of my time has been spent in the security industry. Today I work for an international security systems integrator and service provider. As such we provide technology solutions and services to help businesses, organisations and individuals protect themselves better against crime.

So it kind of all links together for a good cause; my line of work and my love of London as a city, combined with my personal experiences and wanting to help others who help others.

So I am reaching out to you and asking that you support me on this marathon journey and by doing so you will help Crimestoppers to continue the important work they do.

Crimestoppers is unique, it is an independent charity helping to find criminals and solve crimes.  They run the national 0800 555 111 telephone line and secure online tool which enables anyone who feels burdened by their knowledge of crime and criminals to share that information with the guarantee of complete anonymity.  Many of the people who call Crimestoppers live in fear of retribution and, without them, would remain silent.  They are the voice of the individual in the fight against crime. Crimestoppers plays a vital role in the battle to bring criminals to justice, 23 people are arrested everyday and someone is charged with murder every 7 days, as a result of information passed to Crimestoppers.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now,

Kind regards

Peter

Crimestoppers

Charity Registration No. 1108687

Crimestoppers is the independent crime-fighting charity. We help to arrest 17 criminals every day and one murderer every 5 days. Our charity runs the anonymous telephone number, 0800 555 111, that people can call to pass on information about crimes. We also have an anonymous online ‘Giving Information’ form that people can fill out to pass on information. Some people fear the consequences of going to the police when they know about a crime. Crimestoppers is there for them. Because the telephone number is anonymous, callers are not asked for any personal information and calls cannot be traced. 0800 555 111 has been helping to find criminals and solve crimes for 21 years. We’ve received more than 1 million telephone calls with useful information about crimes. It’s a system that works for everyone – except criminals. With your support, we can continue fighting crime to make our society a safer place to live.
