My story

Team FBC have hit the pavement running (think pulled muscles, blisters, training in Kuala Lumpur monsoon and sacrificed lunch breaks - see our video).  We run to raise as much money as possible for the Al Hasan Foundation, a sight-saving charity that performs eye operations in Najaf, southern Iraq.  Check out our video.

Hear it from the team:

Philippa - I’ve been a trustee for this charity for 2 years now and can vouch that all our hard-won fundraising will go directly to the clinic for treating a range of serious eye conditions in the elderly and young children. Haidar will be visiting Najaf in the summer where he donates eye supplies, performs as many cataract operations as he can and helps train the local ophthalmologists to carry on the good work using our laser machine and equipment.

I’m no runner but have committed to running the full length of the 10k without cheating so please dig as deep as you can so I can keep up with the boys!

Daniel - As I don’t have the opportunity to travel to Iraq and help those needy on the ground, the least I can do is run the British 10K and raise whatever I can for the Alhasan Foundation. So please give what you can.

Blaise - Run? What? for charity? 10 kilometres!?! Well, if it's for a good cause then I'm up for it. Come on guys, fork out the support.

Now read the facts

Al Hasan is a small London-based charity founded because of a friendship that sprung up between a friend of mine, Sharon Ridsdale and Haidar Al Hakim, a Royal Free ophthalmologist who treated her cataracts and told her a harrowing story of his return to Najaf after the war and the devastated health system he found there.

The facts are startling: 90% of healthcare in Iraq is provided by private hospitals and clinics, whilst 70% of the population is unemployed. Many Iraqi families find healthcare a luxury they can ill afford and regarding ophthalmic care in particular, the situation is even worse: medical facilities and treatment centres are devastated from years of neglect, with much of the equipment outdated and barely functioning.  This affects the elderly and the young in particular – many old folk go unnecessarily blind and there’s no eye screening for children whatsoever.

Haidar will be travelling to Iraq in a few weeks and everything we manage to raise will be spent directly on essential eye supplies and equipment that he’ll take with him for the clinic.
