Story

Hello and thanks for visiting our fund-raising page.

Our story is unfortunately one that affects far too many people and one that is just too often told.

Barbara Speck was the aunt and a shining light of one of the Joint-Owners of Pink Hygiene, Adam Speck, who sadly suffered twice at the hands of the awful illness, cancer.

Barbara first found out she had Breast Cancer in 1993/94 and through chemotherapy bravely fought the illness to be given the all clear in 1995 when in typical good spirited and fun fashion threw her 'Thank heaven I'm 47' party.

Barbara was a fun-loving lady who enjoyed life and loved spending and sharing it with all her friends and family of whom she held so dear. A successful business-lady in her own right, she ran a recruitment agency in central London from the late 1970's until illness prevented her from continuing later in life.

On a personal note, she was everything and more anyone could ask from an aunt. Throughout my life, she was there to support, guide and love me through any circumstance and only wanted to help me succeed in all endeavors and challenges I faced.

Having got her life back on track after the first triumph over cancer, Barbara began feeling unwell again around 2009, suffering from constant back pains. At first, cancer was not diagnosed and the doctors and medical staff that reviewed her symptoms did not believe this was the cause of her pains. Unfortunately the pain and severity became worse and after more tests and examinations, it was found that Barbara was suffering from various tumors and cancer had spread throughout her body.

Despite her fighting spirit and will to fight the illness, Barbara passed away in 2012 with all her many friends and family by her side.

Barbara, throughout her life, always loved to make people smile and had a verve and vitality for life that I know I have taken inspiration from.

I knew that when I had the opportunity to set up a new business, one of my key drivers behind it was that I wanted to give something back and help support the challenge of finding a cure for this abhorrent illness.

This opportunity came along with the chance to set up a new hygiene company and Pink Hygiene was founded.

It was agreed as part of one of our key business principles and one of our 'Pinky Promises' that for every new contract we win, a percentage of the annual value of the contract will go direct to the cancer charity of choice, Breast Cancer Now (formerly Breakthrough Breast Cancer). My business partner and senior management in the company were fully behind this desire.

From the owners and all staff at Pink Hygiene, we thank you dearly for your custom and for helping us support a charity that can help to save and improve lives.
