In April 2010, my father, Jonathan Pollack, passed away after a bravely fought 3 year battle with oesophageal cancer.
In his memory, I am raising money for two worthy project s that I believe he would have supported, by running the Great North Run (half marathon) in Newcastle on the 18 September.
- The "Oesophago–Gastric Cancer Awareness" Week is a recently established campaign to raise awareness of oesophageal cancer which is now the 5 commonest cause of cancer deaths in the UK and is massively on the increase. Often, the symptoms of this cancer go undetected until far too late.
My Dad had major surgery at the ‘Northern Oesophago-Gastric’ Unit in Newcastle which has internationally recognised expertise. Without this highly specialised surgery, without doubt, he would have had only weeks to live. The surgery in fact gave us nearly three more happy years together.
I hope that this awareness campaign could help to make people identify early symptoms of this extremely aggressive cancer, therefore giving the best chance of survival.
- Development of a Jewish library at the Hertsmere Jewish Primary School.
The big drive for the new academic year at H.J.P.S will see the development of a new Jewish library, specifically for fictional and non-fictional Jewish- themed story books.
By raising money for these two projects in my Dad’s name, I hope to capture his positive and generous spirit.
I know you get asked a lot to give to worthy causes but do please try to give generously. This would mean a great deal to me and all the family.
Also, special thanks to my running partner Michelle who has been incredibly patient with my duff running skills!
Thanks
Wendy

If however you prefer to donate to H.J.P.S, please send a cheque to me at the address below and I will forward this on your behalf.
