My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page

Below is some information regarding the deafblind situation in Kenya and how I hope fundraising will help in tackling this problem:

What is the situation in Kenya for deafblind children?

Deafblindness is more common in Kenya than in the UK because there is little health care, far more diseases affecting sight and hearing and limited immunisation

There are an estimated 14,000 deafblind people in Kenya

There are only 5 deafblind school units and a further 5 vocational training units in this huge country

Some of these schools are in a very poor state and although many of the teachers are dedicated, many are not really trained to handle deafblind children

Education is free in Kenya but residential costs are not and most children live hundreds of miles away from their nearest school and come from families who cannot afford this cost

How I hope Project Uhuru will help in changing all of this

Project Uhuru is about building a long-term sustainable programme in conjunction with the Kenyan Government, to make a difference to deafblind children’s lives— so that they can learn to support themselves and their families. It will achieve this by:

 · Developing Infrastructure – Create dormitories so that children can attend and Sense International will pay their travel and residential fees; Build new classrooms so more children can attend; procure materials and equipment in the vocational units so teenagers can learn trades such as knitting, weaving, carpentry

 · Developing specialist teacher training with the Kenyan Institute of Education

 · Creating an apprentice scheme to improve vocational training

· Linking existing educational units with new ones so they can share their experiences and learn from one another

· Working with government so that they can eventually take responsibility
