The two of us are running the Great South Run (10 miles) on 25th October 2009 in to raise money for CHASE Hospice Care for Children who give invaluable support and respite to Sophie Patmore, Becky's niece.
Sadly, Sophie has a very rare form of mitochondrial disease that has made her muscles extremely weak. She has a tracheotomy and is permanently connected to a ventilator to help her breathe. She cannot swallow and is fed through a tube directly into her tummy. She will never sit, stand or walk but despite all this, she is a very happy, cheeky and above all else, brave little girl. Please visit www.thesophiestory.co.uk for further information.
Sophie requires 24 hour care and was never expected to make it to her first birthday – she is now nearly two and a half! CHASE helped throughout Sophie’s transition from hospital to home and helped to turn the prospect of a 12 month stay in intensive care, into a 3 month stay in Christophers - Chase’s Hospice based in Guildford, .
CHASE continue to support Sophie and her parents’ through their Community Team who support life limited families in their own homes. This allows them to do things that we all take for granted, like shopping, eating out, or trips to the cinema. CHASE provide invaluable respite for Annette and Neil, but more importantly allow Sophie to visit Christopher's and spend time in the hydrotherapy pool (see picture), and participate in music therapy to strengthen her communication and sensory skills – All this costs families like Sophie’s absolutely NOTHING.
To make this possibly CHASE costs nearly £4 million a year to run, and relies almost entirely on donations :-
