Story
The Muslim Hands team are one of the only UK based charities working on the ground inside Burma and have been there since 2008. They are coordinating with the government and a cluster of local organizations to distribute essential humanitarian aid.
WHO ARE THE ROHINGYA?
The Rohingya are a Muslim ethnic group from the state of Arakan in Western Burma. Despite living in Arakhan since the 8th Century, they have not been recongised as citizens by the Burmese government since 1948.
WHY ARE THEY BEING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST?
The Rakhine Buddhist majority and the Burmese government consider the Rohingya to be of ‘impure’ Burmese descent because of their darker skin complexion, the fact they speak a different language and primarily because they are Muslim and not Buddhist. There is now a call for a state-sponsored mass genocide of the Muslim community as a whole in Burma and are now targeting other Muslim ethnic groups.
