Story

Carl Duroseis going to complete the National Three Peaks Challenge in July 2017. The challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks in Wales, England, and Scotland, all within 36 hours.

The three mountains are:

Snowden in Wales (1085m),
Scafell Pike in England (977m),
Ben Nevis in Scotland (1344m).

The total distance I will walk is 27 miles (44km), with a total ascent of 9,800 feet (3,000m).

I am hoping to raise over £500 for WellChild, the national charity for sick children. Our combined effort will allow WellChild to carry on its work to help and support chronically sick children throughout the UK.

There are hundreds of thousands of children in the UK living with long-standing illness or disability. By climbing the three highest mountains in Wales, England, and Scotland within 36 hours, I hope that I can help WellChild in their aim of improving the lives of as many sick children as possible.

The money raised will help WellChild to fund their nurses and garden/bedroom makeovers for chronically sick children.

We aim to have scaled and descended the tallest mountain in Wales by around 2pm. Afterwards, we shall head to Scafell Pike, in England's Lake District. Starting this seven-hour climb at 8pm, we shall attempt this one overnight, with the aim of watching the sunrise from the summit. Departing Seatoller at 5am Saturday morning; the plan is to try and sleep in the coach as it heads north to Scotland. We should arrive at Ben Nevis around midday, we aim to conquer the tallest mountain in the British Isles within eight hours. Once done we shall take a well-deserved rest at a hotel in Fort William, before travelling back to Birmingham on Sunday morning.

WELLCHILD

The team of WellChild Children’s Nurses work with sick children and their families in towns and cities across the country to help ensure that children with complex care needs can leave hospital and return home. Those WellChild Nurses provide a vital service for families during the establishment of the often complicated care requirements of their seriously ill children, and they are vital in the prevention of frequent hospital re-admissions.

The practical help provided by the WellChild Helping Hands scheme also means that children and young people living at home have rooms and gardens suitable for their needs. The scheme provides resources and manpower for home and garden makeovers – all managed by WellChild with each project carefully designed and tailored to the needs of each family.

In addition to the specific and practical support given to children and young people by WellChild Children’s Nurses and WellChild’s Helping Hands scheme, WellChild is also working on the bigger picture for children in the UK both now and in the future.

WellChild campaigns for the best possible treatment for young people no matter what their condition or background, working with partners such as the Royal College of Nursing to help influence care for children.

And the £20 million invested in ground-breaking children’s health research projects over the past 30 years has seen huge rewards in developments spanning pain, liver and kidney disease, cancer, diabetes and rare disorders. WellChild has also provided funding for the development of the Neonatal Research Laboratory at Evelina Children’s Hospital in London, the WellChild Pain Research Centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and the Children’s Research Centre at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
