My story
On 4 September 2011 Rory Merchant, William Green and David “the Hedgehog” Manning will be attempting the gruelling challenge of cycling the length of Britain from Land’s End to John O groats in a bid to raise money for The Motor Neuron Disease (MND) Association.
We aim to cycle over 950 miles from end to end in 10 days which means covering approximately 95 miles a day for 10 days.
This is a colossal Challenge considering none of us have done much cycling and until March this year did not even own bikes! Training thus far has gone relatively well with the only real incidents to speak of being a series of sore bums, lots of chaffing and a number of stationary (cleat related) comedy falls by all members! Unfortunately none of these have been caught on camera…yet.
In March 2011 Rory’s Uncle (also called Rory Merchant) was diagnosed with the Disease, MND, which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the upper and lower motor neurones. Degeneration of the motor neurones leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. There is currently no cure for MND. However the Motor Neurone Disease Association continues to need funding for the necessary research and tests to find a way of combating and ultimately defeating this disease.
We are undertaking this challenge to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association in support of “Uncle Rory” as he and his wife Irene deal with the effects of the illness. He is staying positive and as ever retaining his unique brand of humour.
It would mean a massive amount to all of us if you could dig deep and sponsor us for this challenge. The work that The MNDA do can really make a huge difference to the lives of MND sufferers and their families. This is a great cause and your donations will be make a difference!
If nothing else, 10 days sitting on a hard saddle must be worth a few quid! We will keep everyone posted as to our progress on training for the event as well as on the actual event itself. [See Rory’s, Will’s and David’s Facebook pages].

Charity Registration No. 294354
The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association is the only national organisation in England, Wales and Northern Ireland dedicated to the support of people with MND and those who care for them. Our mission is to fund and promote research to bring about an end to MND. Until then we will do all that we can to enable everyone with MND to receive the best care, achieve the highest quality of life possible, and die with dignity. We will also do all that we can to support the families and carers of people with MND. Our vision is of a world free of MND.
