After about 10 minutes deliberation, Tom and I have decided to jump from a great height for a good cause.
In June 2010 we shall jump from a 170ft platform and plummet rapidly towards the ground with nothing but a glorified elastic band to save us.
Having watched an incredibly enlightening talk from the founder of Reprieve, Clive Stafford Smith, at Latitude festival 2009, we decided that said organisation would be a more than worthwhile cause to raise money for.
About Reprieve
Reprieve uses the law to enforce the human rights of prisoners, from death row to
Guantánamo Bay.
We investigate, we litigate and we educate, working on the frontline, providing legal support to prisoners unable to pay for it themselves. We promote the rule of law around the world, and secure each person’s right to a fair trial. And in doing so, we save lives.
Reprieve prioritises the cases of prisoners accused of the most extreme crimes, such as acts of murder or terrorism, as it is in such cases that human rights are most likely to be jettisoned or eroded. Reprieve focuses on cases involving the world’s most powerful governments, especially those that should be upholding the highest standards when it comes to fair trials.• £25,000 pays for a lawyer to work on death penalty cases in the US full-time for one year
• £1,000 buys a DNA test for a wrongfully convicted prisoner on death row.
• £500 purchases a flight for a lawyer to visit prisoners in Guantánamo bay
• £50 buys half an hour of professional translation of interviews with victims and witnesses of extraordinary renditions.
• £5 pays for a single police report in a death penalty case
As you can see, anything you give can make a great difference, so please give what you can. We're jumping from 170ft for goodness' sake, sponsor!
