25th April 2010 - Update
I completed the London Marathon in 6 hours 56 mins - my time certainly won't set any records but I am so thrilled I was able to take part and to cross the finish line and claim my medal!
Best bit - the supporters along the sidelines cheering their support of all the runners, and offering sweets and refreshments. This includes my brother who had to give me a hug at mile 20 when I had a bad moment and he passed on the messages of support I had received from family and friends in Australia, Spain, Finland and of course England!
Worse bit - the pain! Apart from my quadriceps hurting horrendously, I ended up with a blister on the ball of my left foot and it felt like my foot was on fire.
Funny moment - nearly missing entry into the starting area and having to run to the gate and I agreed with the man next to me who was puffing up the hill with me whilst saying "this wasn't part of the arrangement!" Thankfully there were so many runners I had time to recover before the marathon actually got underway!

I have always wanted to take part in the London marathon and this year I have been given that opportunity on behalf of the charity Baby Lifeline. I only have 10 weeks to train so this will be a huge challenge for me but one I am looking forward to.
I aim to raise £3,000 for Baby Lifeline. It is a unique national charity offering loving care and support to pregnant mothers and new born babies all over the UK.
Funds raised help to supply hospitals up and down the country with equipment ranging from digital weighing scales to major pieces of technology such as incubators and scanners. The charity is equally proud of the support it gives to training and education programmes for doctors, midwives and other associated health professionals.
Currently Baby Lifeline is working on a medical publishing project which it confidently expects to be of great benefit to both midwives and obstetricians. Along with this initiative Baby Lifeline is running a series of conferences designed to address issues of vital concern in the field of obstetrics.
I would welcome your support in my challenge to complete the marathon and raise as much money as I can for Baby Lifeline.
Thank you.
Ruth
