This November I will be volunteering with Dental Project . I will be putting my dental nursing skills to great use as the only dental nurse on the trip. The majority of the efforts are focused in the Apurimac region situated in the high . The area has a population of 50 000 people and is at present serviced by two Peruvian dentists.
Dental Project provided emergency dental care and education to the most remote and impoverished areas of . Processed foods and sugar have been introduced into the locals diet and this has been a factor in the eruption of rampant oral infection... some villages have no electric or running water but Coca-Cola can get through!
The volunteers travel to the people using portable dental equipment and set up surgeries in the local Health Posts and schools travelling in two 4x4 trucks. I am told I will have to endure some harsh living and working conditions a sleeping bag suitable for -18C is required!
Adults and children walk for up to seven hours to receive treatment, starting with children all prospective patients line up to be screened for pain, infection and decay. The project helps to reduce pain and suffering, mostly extractions are carried out on people that may have lived in pain for years, also basic restorative dentistry (fillings) with the use of a portable drill and occasionally minor surgeries are carried out.
Oral health care awareness classes and tooth brushing demonstrations are carried out, tooth brushes are distributed and fluoride applications are placed.
A drastic decline in cavities has been recognised; this organisation is helping to enhance Peruvian's dental awareness and is preventing people living with dental pain since 2003.
In order to do this I need to raise £2500, any donations will be gladly excepted please be sure that you add my name to your donation and tick yes to gift aid if you are eligible at www.justgiving.com
