ING New York City Marathon 2010 · 7 November 2010 ·

AFK is a disability and neurodiversity charity providing support to children and young people across the UK. We assist young people in accessing specialised mobility equipment that isn't available on the NHS and routes to paid employment in an effort to close the disability employment gap.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am running the New York marathon on the 7th november 2010 for action for kids. Action for kids is a national charity that works with disabled children and young people, there parents and carers. They not only provide mobility equipment but provide opportunity for work and training.

Action for kids provides specialist chairs that specifically fit the user. This specialist equipment can dramatically improve the owners life. In the case of James one of the people that action for kids has helped. He has a Muscular Dystrophy condition (muscle wasting condition, which is getting worse). He deteriaoted when he was 12 and lost virtually most of his control over his body . The chair he was provided by the local health authority with no longer suited his needs.Sitting in the chair was painful as his body was twisted, and made it very difficult to make eye contact. Sitting in this position was not only  painful but bad for his health, as it put pressure on the lungs and other internal organs. He applied for a new wheel chair from the local authority but he had only had the chair for 2 years out of 5 required. Action for kids was able, due to the generous support from its donors to provide James a wheel chair that fit his needs. There was a dramatic change he was no longer in pain and started to gain enormous enthusiasm for everything he does and has become chatty and full of smiles again.

James is only one of many people that Action for kids helps and as you can see the money they get is going on vital equipment and support that allow people to have the quality of life they deserve.

The other side to charity is making sure that people are given practical work experience. People can come in every day to undergo a working style condition which will prepare then for later in life. There progress is tracked every day allowing them to see what they have achieved. Setting them up for there later life .

I visited the charity last week which allowed me to meet some of the people that they helped. It was clear from them that action for kids has dramatically improved there quality of life and has helped them out in ways you cant image. Not only due to the equipment they provide but also by the fantastic support. With your help we can make this charity grow and help it continue the fantastic work it is doing.
