Story

Hi, my name is Haydn Jones and I am 5 years old.

I was born at 29 weeks and weighed 3lbs 2 oz.  I spent the first 6 weeks in hospital and when I weighed 5lbs I was allowed home with my Mum and Dad.

When I left hospital Mum and Dad were told I had had a bleed on the left side of my brain, but at that point they didn’t know what that meant, and what it would mean for my future.

Mum and Dad noticed things weren’t quite right with my left foot from an early age and at the age of 6 months I had an MRI scan which then resulted in me being diagnosed with a condition called Spastic Diplegia (Cerebral Palsy).  My legs are very tight and over time they will become tighter.  I can walk but I don’t walk very well and I do get tired easily as I walk on my toes, which as you can imagine uses a lot of energy and doesn’t help me very much with my balance.  As I get older I am going to get tighter and tighter and my body will suffer in other areas.  My walking will get worse, and I may eventually need a wheelchair.

There is an operation that can help me called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) which cuts the nerves at the bottom of my spine, removing the spasticity in my legs permanently!  After the operation I will have to go through a lot of therapy to help me get back on my feet and hopefully  learn how to walk again.

I recently visited Great Ormond Street Hospital and the doctors there have accepted me for the SDR operation.  They have told me I am an excellent candidate and recommend early surgery, which we are all hoping will be May this year.

We are hoping to raise around £30,000 using Tree of Hope.  This will enable us to cover the cost of my therapy for up to two years after the operation.  If you would like to help me reach my dreams you can either contribute to my fundraising page or hold an event on my behalf.  Mum, Dad and I would be forever grateful for any help you can give.

If we exceed the target, or if we do not raise enough funds, or if they cannot be used for any other reason, the funds raised will go to Tree of Hope to assist other sick children
