Story

This October I am running the 10 mile Bupa Great South run and I am fundraising for my chosen charity, Banunule Primary School.

Banunule Primary School provides a free education to orphans and underprivilaged children living in an area called Kisugu which is found on the outskirts of the capital city, Kampala, in Uganda, East Africa.

I first visited the school in 2006 and volunteered there for several months helping out mainly in the school clinic, which in turn inspired me to train as a nurse in the UK. Since then, I have regularly visited the school and it always amazes me to see the brilliant job that all the staff are doing, despite limited resources and finances. With the support from various donors, the school is able to offer an education to around 180 children; however there is still a great deal that needs to be done.

Over the past 50 years Uganda has experienced a great deal of conflict and as a result, the people and infrastructure have suffered. Following the dictatorships of Obote, Idi Amin and the recent 20 year conflict with the Lord's Resistance Army, not to mention the prevalence of many untreated diseases such as HIV/AIDS and TB, there are now unfortunately thousands of children left without parents or families.

Through the money raised from this run, I hope to be able to fund the salary of a Ugandan social worker to assist at the school. The role of the social worker will be to find suitable foster families for children, provide counselling for struggling children and above all, to ensure that all children are living in a safe and healthy environment.
