The Viking Challenge - Iceland on Horseback.
The Challenge - 1. To get fit!! 2. To ride Icelandic horses for up to 50 kms a day over five days. The scenery should be spectacular! We will stay in school houses and cabins in the mountains, they advise us to take plenty of padding for the saddles!!
We will be riding with a hurd of horses, changing horse two or three times each day. The terrain will be challenging and the pace fast. If I was to say I am excited that would be an understatement. I am going to get fit and try to ride as much as possibel beforehand. The ride is in August and I cant wait!!
The British Horse Society welfare section does a huge amount of work. They work tirelesly to educate and try to prevent cruelty through ignorance. The money raised by the riding challenges contribute greatly to this cause. From the dangers of Ragwort to bad breeding policies they aim to improve the quality of life for the horse.
As a small time breeder - one mare, one (gorgeous - I am not biased at all!!) yearling and one foal, I would never have considered breeding my mare if she had not been a good sort! She has good confirmation, she is well bred and has a pretty good nature. I did not breed her to a stallion who might improve defects, I wanted a nice little horse who would be a family type and be marketable - not that I intend to sell!!! Not the first one anyway, but you never know, I might have too, and there lies the problem. Many people breed for all the wrong reasons and the sad result time and again is a poorly bred animal who ends up unwanted, sometimes maltreated or at worst on the meat wagon to somewhere in europe. We dont want that, we want to stop that, so please donate to my cause.
Thanks so much
