My story

Katie's Story:

Katie is supported by Self Unlimited. Her goal was to live in a flat of her own. A few years ago, she did not feel she had the right skills to be able to do this. But with our help, Katie was able to take that very important step.

“I used to live in a house that I shared with two other girls. When I moved there, I needed a lot of support, and I wasn’t even able to be at home on my own. Self Unlimited helped me with my independent living skills and I started going to places on my own, catching the bus by myself into the town. Staff also supported me to work on my job skills.

I now have a paid job at a Day Centre, working in the kitchens, and also do voluntary work in a charity shop. In my person centred planning meetings, I said that I really wanted to be more independent and to live by myself. Staff helped me to aim for this and now I live in my very own flat. I have 40 hours support each week. I now feel much more in control of my life. If I want my support hours to change, then I talk to Self Unlimited and they sort it out. I feel very proud and happy. I have so much more confidence now, and my family are really pleased with what I have achieved in such a short space of time.”

The continued support from people like you is vital during this difficult financial climate. I would like to personally thank you for helping us to support people like Katie to have a more independent and fulfilled life. This includes having choices in how and where they live, training, work and social opportunities to enable them to achieve personal goals.
