Story

The Royal Marsden Hospital is the largest cancer centre in Europe, saving lives and providing amazing specialist care to so many cancer patients. On 10/4/11 I ran the Brighton Marathon in 3hrs 42 mins, to raise monies and awareness of Bladder Cancer. As I completed the Marathon in a 'qualifying good for age time', this means that I will be able to run good for age in London 2012, enabling me to raise further monies. Last year I ran the London Marathon in 3hrs 52mins, raising £6,300 for Willen Hospice.

I was diagnosed with Bladder Cancer at the age of 37 years and my treatment included; three types of chemotheraphy and 19 laser operations to remove tumours, over a six year period. When the cancer began to spread I had major surgery to remove my bladder and other organs, at The Royal Marsden Hospital and an amazing consultant, saved my life, creating a neo-bladder (urinary diversion). I began running, to help with my recovery and to raise monies to help others. I am the first known person to have run a Marathon, running in a qualifying good for age time, with a neo-bladder, hopefully inspiring other cancer patients! A big thank you to all my family and friends, who continue to support me.

I also ran the Brighton Marathon in memory of Karen, a wonderful person, who was much loved by everyone, who lost her life last year, aged 44 years to Bladder Cancer. She was with me every step of the way and remains to be a focus of my running.
