Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
This year I have decided to swim the equivalent of Loch Ness, which is 24 miles, or 1536 lengths of the VirginActive pool, in Edinburgh, between Saturday September 19th and Saturday December 12th. I am raising money for Fanconi Hope Charitable Tust. Fanconi Anaemia is a rare genetic disorder which leads to bone marrow failure, and also a high risk of leukaemia and subsequent head and neck cancers. My 8-year-old niece, Louise, was diagnosed with this disorder last year. At the moment funding is badly needed to set up a national registry of affected children, which will make it possible for them to be invited to participate in research which could benefit not only them, but all sufferers, and future sufferers of cancers in general. For more information on the charity, visit www.fanconihope.org.
This is a charity very close to my heart. You can never understand the effect that such a diagnosis can have on a family until you experience it at first hand. So many difficult treatment decisions to be made, and a constant worry. At least by raising a little money towards the research costs, I can do something practical which, even if it doesn't help Louise, might benefit future sufferers from this disorder. I have 12 weeks to complete the challenge, which, at 24 miles, is 2 miles longer than those I have done in previous years. Can I do it? Please give me lots of encouragement....and don't tell me my hair looks frizzy (chlorine...).
