Sense is here to support disabled people from the first weeks of life through all the major milestones of adulthood. Over 70 years, we’ve built extensive knowledge and expertise in supporting disabled people with complex needs, including deafblind people.

Story

The aim is to lose a few lbs to raise a few more £s for charity.  With all the indulges of the festive season and the horrible winter nights being behind us it is time to get back to healthy eating and the gym.  I would love to help support the fantastic charity Sense in the process.

As some of you might already know that I have a 22 year old brother, Thomas, who is severely disabled. He is around 18mths mentally with no speech and is profoundly deaf.  Throughout Thomas' life we, as a family, have had to fight to gain access to the care and support Thomas needs. After a bumpy start trying to transition from full-time education when Thomas was 19 we were able to secure funding for a place at a care-home ran by Sense around two years ago.

Sense is relatively unique in focusing on people with multiple sensory impairment - imagine trying to complete even the simplest of tasks without two senses...? He loves water so he adores their hot tub, they regularly organise trips to the swimming pool and holidays, continue to work on his communication using a symbol system developed whilst at school, choose age-appropriate clothes on his behalf and maintain his tropical fish tank, a 21st birthday present - these are just a few examples of how they provide Thomas with a home rather than just a place to live. They also provide support on a day to day basis to individuals and families and day-care.

So please support me in beating the bulge by digging deep and donating.  The work that they do not only has a huge impact on the individuals they help but also their siblings, parents and surrounding family.
