Friends:
I am running the San Francisco Half Marathon on July 26th to raise money for a UK charity in Southern Zambia, that works to educate young people against the spread of HIV/AIDS through peer education, economic empowerment, theatre, radio and sports clubs. In September I will travel to Zambia for one month to teach several courses on financial literacy, sound editing, and volunteer in their local hospital.
The charity, founded in 2001, also provides medical care and support for those living with HIV/AIDS and orphans who have lost parents to the disease. The charity is located in Monze and Mazabuka, districts in Southern Zambia, and is unique in that its focus is on PEER EDUCATION - meaning they train and employ young adults in rural villages to mobilise their own communities to fight poverty and HIV/AIDS.
Some "facts" about Zambia:
GDP per capita: $623
Life expectancy: 40.5 years old
Probability at birth of not surviving to age 60: 75%
% of pop. living on less than $2 a day: 87%
% of young women, ages 15-24 living with HIV/AIDS: 16.8-25.2%
% of young men, ages 15-24 living with HIV/AIDS: 6.5-9.7%
