Story
Hi there,
On July 1st this year we will set-off to trek up Africa's highest peak. Kilimanjaro is 5895m high and our attempt to summit the roof of Africa will take the best part of six days. The descent takes considerably less - approximately two days (gravity assisted!). The actual length of the route up from the start at 'Machame Gate' at 1900m to the snow capped summit is approximately 40km.
We have decided that we will use our trek to support the work of CAFOD - a charity working in many different ways to tackle poverty and injustice in more than 60 countries around the world. You can find out more about CAFOD's work by visiting their website: www.cafod.org.uk
Here are just a few examples:
- To date more than £4.7 million raised to help those affected by the Haiti earthquake that killed over 230,000.
- Providing clean, safe and accesible drinking water in many countries. Many deaths are caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation, mainly through infectious diarrhoea – and around 90% are children from developing countries.
- Helping give people in rural areas the essential skills to provide for themselves for the long term, such as learning sustainable farming techniques and rearing better quality animals.
- Work to prevent the spread of HIV, care for those affected by it, and support for those working to change systems negatively affecting people with, or at risk from, HIV. Supporting counselling, home-based care, training for work, and support for children left orphaned or otherwise affected.
Please support us by helping to raise valuable funding for CAFOD to continue its fantastic work.
Many thanks,
Simon & Lizzie
