My story

STOP PRESS  -  COMPLETED ON THE 30th SEPTEMBER 2009!!!

Please see the photo's of Marrakesh and the climb up North Africa’s highest peak, Jebel Toubkal (4167m); within the High Atlas mountains of Morocco for the excellent charity Oxfam. This mountain is roughly 4 times the height of Snowdon and higher than it sounded when I booked the trip!

I set off with a group of 16 excellent people looking for an adventure and we headed into the mountains.  Initially the walking was tough but steady, although one by one we all had our own battles to face. I think the majority of the group suffered with 'stomach' issues at different times meaning you had to be careful who you walked behind... I was either very lucky not to suffer in this way or it was down to my excellent impression of a vegetarian for the week. However, the altitude did take its toll on most of us and I certainly felt the air thinning from about 3,000 meters. We had a day to get acclimatised a bit more at the base camp (3,200m), although it was so cold.  There was frost on the tent and not much sleeping going on as I contemplated why I didn't pack more clothes...  The final assent was on the 30th September up to 4,167 meters and got slower and slower the higher we went. I think the last 200 meters climb took well over half an hour as your body tried to use the limited oxygen to move your muscles the way they were intended... but it was sooooo worth it! The views were amazing as was the sense of achievement for us all - the photo's really don't do it justice!

After an hour or so on the top we made our way back to the base camp feeling our lungs fill with a little more oxygen as we descended along with a few more chocolate bars for good measure... It was a lot quicker going down but several of us, including me suffered from splitting headaches from the changing altitudes and retired to try to sleep it off. The final day was easier as we walked off the mountain and returned to Marrakesh...

I have covered all of my costs to ensure all of your kind sponsorship goes to Oxfam. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

There is still time to sponsor me now to help me reach my revised target, so please dig deep and donate now.  Oxfam can really make a relatively small donation go a long way and a very generous donation go even further!

So many thanks for reading this far and for your personal support for me and Oxfam...
