We are excited to be getting married on June 19th, 2011! To make this day more meaningful, we are doing a fundraiser to support the education of rural children studying in the Isha Vidhya Matriculation Schools in India.
So why Isha Vidhya?
When we first heard about Isha Vidhya, we immediately connected to the cause because we realize that education has been instrumental in bringing us where we are today in life.
Isha Vidhya provides rural children with affordable, high-quality education where it is otherwise unavailable. Over the coming years, Isha Vidhya will set up 207 schools in villages across India.
So how is Isha Vidhya different from rural government schools?
The schools are designed to build confident, english speaking, computer-adept youth, on par with students from good urban schools. The children will be prepared to pursue higher education in the best colleges and develop to become socially engaged, responsible citizens. Education is the only tool to help them grow into self reliant individuals with character, confidence and dignity.
What will the money be used for?
Currently 7 schools are operational and over 2000 students are enrolled. These schools need libraries, sports equipment, school buses, books, lab materials etc. So any amount you give will go directly towards funding these requirements. $15 could buy a child health supplements for a year and $20 could buy the schools 10 library books. So no amount is insignificant.
Our involvement so far?
The 2 of us donated a scholarship amount of USD 240 which has been funding a 7 year old girl for her education the past 1 yr (Her name is Sajitha and she is in the child in the display pic :) ) It has provided her with school fees, books, uniforms and a nutritious meal everyday. We are even receiving regular updates about her performance in school together with handwritten notes from her. It is so gratifying to know that a small amount of our earning can go such a long way in providing for a child.

We would like to humbly request that instead of gifting us in kind for the wedding, do consider making a donation to this cause we are supporting. These children need all the help they can get and more. $20 is one weekend movie outing to you, but it is the cost of health supplements for a year for a child.
