Spinning discs to make dreams come true
Darren
plans to play records for 96 hours non-stop and hopes to raise a magnificent
£10,000 with his effort to send sick and disabled children on the
holiday of a lifetime.
His fundraising has begun in earnest at http://www.justgiving.com/bigmix.
Darren won’t be alone during the record attempt – Guinness
Record Book rules state that he has to have at least one person dancing
throughout the entire 96 hours!
Darren has been totally blind since he was 16 and got involved in music
after leaving college, being involved in several bands as both musician
and sound engineer. He also worked on hospital radio for 18 months.
“My life changing day came in July 1997, when
I performed my first gig as a DJ. I was working at a college for blind
students in Birmingham and volunteered my services as DJ for their summer
ball, I forgot to tell them I'd never done it before,” says Darren
on his website http://www.dont-stop-the-music.com.
Using borrowed equipment I was a nervous wreck – but it was
a total barnstormer of a night. It was quite something to have the staged
stormed by folks cheering… That was it, I knew I had to do this
for real. Six months later I'd bought myself a complete mobile set up
and was out there performing for cash!”
Darren is doing the record attempt in aid of Dreamflight, a charity which
takes incurably ill, sick or disabled children to Orlando for the holiday
of a lifetime, visiting the Theme Parks and giving them some respite from
the illnesses that cause them pain, distress and disrupt their lives.
If you would like to sponsor Darren and bring a smile
to the face of a seriously ill or disabled child, you can visit his fundraising
page at http://www.justgiving.com/bigmix.
