Fundraiser of the month, June 2005

A group of 125 people set off up the UK's highest mountain peak, Ben Nevis, on May 29th to raise money for a new charity that will build homes for people in Darfur, Sudan and Aceh in Indonesia - an area destroyed by the Tsunami last December.

Ulfa Aid was set up last year and has already raised about £60,000 for Aceh. It recently joined Justgiving to make it faster and simpler for fundraisers to raise money by taking part in the sponsored walk.

"Ideally we want to raise about £50,000," said Zafar Iqbal. "Last year we did the walk with about 80 people and raised £35,000. Everyone seems to be happy with the Justgiving site - it's made things very easy for them. Some of the group have already achieved the targets they set themselves."

The charity's success with online fundraising in just a few days shows how easy it is for fundraisers to use our online tools to help raise money for charity. All money donated through the site is transferred directly to the charity, so Ulfa Aid is already benefitting from the sponsored walk.

You can show your support for Ulfa Aid by sponsoring one of their walkers featured here. The charity focuses on helping needy children by constructing schools, medical centres and houses. It wants to build from scratch in Aceh and Darfur and is currently looking at plans. So far the top fundraisers are Sumit, Ihety and Adil who have raised over £1,500 online.
