Fundraiser of the month, August 2006
Emily and her angels
"22 years old, small, blonde and smiley" is
how Emily Thackray describes herself. "I love life, have just graduated,
the whole world at my feet...as long as I get a transplant in time."
Emily has Cystic Fibrosis — the UK's most common,
life-threatening inherited disease. The severity of damage to her lungs
means that she is waiting for a double lung transplant and was told in
March 2005 that without it she only had a year left to live.
Yet 16 months later Emily is still fighting, and
determined to complete the Hydro Active Women's Challenge on September
3rd. You can sponsor this inspirational young woman, and over 50 others
who will run and walk with her on the day, at: www.justgiving.com/emilysangels
"I am still here, still fighting, but also still
waiting, and my time is running out. I wear oxygen 24 hours a day and
use a wheelchair, which allows me to participate in essential girly shopping
trips, but life is getting harder and simple things like putting on my
socks leaves me breathless," says Emily.
The average life expectancy of someone with CF is 31 and currently there
is no cure.
"With your help, children born today with CF
will not face this uncertainty. We can keep improving treatments and
facilities for people with CF and ultimately find a cure."
Emily wears oxygen 24 hours a day and has recently had to be admitted
to hospital with a collapsed lung. Her future is uncertain and half of
all those waiting for a lung transplant die before they get one.
She is determined to raise as much money as possible for the Cystic
Fibrosis Trust to help it in its search for a cure for this terrible
disease. Help her by sponsoring her at www.justgiving.com/emilysangels.
If you feel
inspired by Emily, you can set up your own fundraising
page to raise money with any sort of challenge you choose, for over 1,000
charities featured on Justgiving. Just click here.
Writing a personal message and using a good photo — or several — helps
encourage friends and colleagues to get into the spirit and donate generously
too.
