Three mountains in one day

Samantha Bate and her daughter Sophie-Natasha

Samantha Bate was 27 and had a 13 month old daughter, Sophie-Natasha, when she died in March from an aggressive brain tumour just five months after being diagnosed.

Sam and husband James decided during her illness to raise money for Andrea's Gift, a charity that works to raise awareness and funds for those suffering from childhood and adult brain tumours.

"The charity was very close to Sam's heart — she wanted to make a difference to other sufferers," James told Justgiving.

So on June 30, James and his friends began their ascent of Ben Nevis, then drove to Scafell Pike in the early hours of Saturday morning and after reaching the summit there, they drove to Wales to scale Snowdon.

Out of 20 walkers, 19 made it to the finish and 14 did it within 24 hours.

"It was a bunch of friends of Sam's and mine. The first mountain sorted us out into groups of ability and we stayed in those groups for the rest of the trip. It was very hot, but we achieved it, which is great," James told Justgiving.

Sadly Sam was not at the finish line to congratulate the runners, but daughter Sophie was taken to meet the weary walkers as they came down from Snowdon.

You can still sponsor James and the rest of the team for their fantastic effort at www.justgiving.com/3peaktrekkers and help them towards their £75,000 target.

Andrea's Gift works with the neurosurgery, oncology and radiotherapy departments in the Leeds teaching hospitals to provide brain tumour research and support across Yorkshire.

James and his friends want to raise enough money to fund a researcher who will look into developing effective treatments for brain tumours so that other people will not have to go through what Sam and their family have experienced.

If you feel inspired by James and his friends, you can set up your own fundraising page to raise money with any sort of challenge you choose, for over 1,000 charities featured on Justgiving. Just click here.

Writing a personal message and using a good photo — or several — helps encourage friends and colleagues to get into the spirit and donate generously too.
