Fundraiser of the month, April 2006
Facing a challenge for Adam
Alison Mitchell usually goes on relaxing holidays, but this year she
is going to do something very different.
For 10 days she'll join a group of people walking
the ancient Inca trail in Peru, climbing to an altitude of 4,400 metres.
It will be a physical and mental challenge but she has decided to use
the experience to raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), a
charity that works to raise awareness of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome,
in memory of her fiancé Adam.
Adam and Alison met working together at the Bank of Scotland and were set
to get married in October this year.
Alison will be paying for the cost of the trip herself
so all the money she raises will go straight to CRY. You can see her
fundraising page and support her at www.justgiving.com/alison_mitchell.
"I
want to raise awareness of this cause because I can't believe that people
as young as Adam are dying for seemingly no reason," she says. "The
trek is giving me a good focus and purpose for the rest of the year."
Alison has raised a staggering £7,330 in just
a couple of weeks and hopes to boost the total even further to benefit
CRY. Because Alison and Adam worked together, they knew many of the same
people, and she emailed her fundraising page to everyone she knows.
The response was impressive and heartfelt- Adam's wide network of friends
have all come together to support Alison's fundraising journey.
She is
also planning to organise a fundraising golf event in the summer and
a post-trek black tie dinner in honour of Adam's memory.
As well as raising awareness, CRY supports those
who have suffered a loss through a network of affected families and counselling;
promotes heart screening, ECG testing programmes and contributes to medical
research; donates medical equipment to doctors' surgeries and hospitals
and funds the CRY Centre for Sports Cardiology at the British Olympic
Medical Centre.
