Fundraiser of the month, May 2006
Calumn and Duncan's big ride
The 200-mile cycle through some of Scotland's most
beautiful landscapes was entirely Calumn and Duncan's idea. And they
insisted on a really long route to raise as much money as possible for
Cancer Research UK.
"I'm doing this because my mum died of cancer when I was
three. I also don't want anyone else to have to feel the same way I
do. I know I can't save everyone but if we raise a lot of money we
can certainly help," says Calumn on his fundraising page at www.justgiving.com/CalumnandDuncan.
Julie Twaddle died in 1998, nine years after being diagnosed
with breast cancer.
The two boys have already raised nearly £6,000, with the help
of their dads who have shamelessly emailed everyone they can think
of through work and social contacts. The local press and media have
also been very interested in the story with pictures of the boys and
TV coverage of the event.
"We (the dads) are very proud of our sons. The
bike ride was entirely their own idea and they insisted that it had to
be a long way so that they could raise as much money as possible. We
will be supporting them as bike bound sherpas along the way. 200 miles
is a long way for 11 year old boys to cycle (not to mention their dads!),"
said the two Brians.
The farthest Calumn has cycled before is 50 miles
which he did recently in a training ride — ending it 'completely
shattered' according to Dad Brian.
"I expect the boys will be exhausted by the
time they reach Fort William (on Sunday). But it'll be into the cars
and straight home as they've got school on Monday morning," he told Justgiving.
