Centrepoint — "The only thing worth supporting"

The Centrepoint team

Claire, 21, James, 20 and Carl, 18, live in Centrepoint Derwentside and together with Bob, a Support and Development worker there, they plan to run the BUPA Great North Run to raise money for a charity that has transformed their lives.

It is, says Carl, "the only thing worth supporting - apart from Sunderland FC!".

"Our team is living proof of the difference Centrepoint can make to people's lives and we want to make sure they can help as many other young people as possible."

To support the team's impressive effort to raise funds, you can sponsor them at www.justgiving.com/centrepointderwentside.

Angela Basso, fundraising manger for Centrepoint, said young people living in Centrepoint accommodation quite often run in its race teams, but have never chosen to raise money before. "These three said they wanted to raise money as well, which is fantastic."

It will be a huge challenge for all four as they haven't run before, but even more so for Carl as he is completely blind and will be linked to Bob for the race. Carl is Centrepoint's first blind resident.

Centrepoint provides vulnerable young people with safe accommodation, education, help with employment, counselling, specialist support and training in life skills such as cooking and budgeting.

"It's a really friendly place to live and has inspired us all," says the team on their fundraising page.

Residents normally live at Derwentside for about six months while they work out what to do about income, benefit entitlements and access to affordable housing and possibly education. Centrepoint staff help them identify what their housing options are in the local area — though there is little access to affordable housing for young people in the north east.

To help Centrepoint continue and expand its work with homeless people in the north east, please sponsor Claire, James and Carl at www.justgiving.com/centrepointderwentside.

If you feel inspired by the team, you can set up your own fundraising page to raise money with any sort of challenge you choose, for over 1,000 charities featured on Justgiving. Just click here.

Writing a personal message and using a good photo — or several — helps encourage friends and colleagues to get into the spirit and donate generously too.
