Help Asia Quake survivors

International Rescue CommitteeMore than 40,000 people have been killed in the largest earthquake to hit Pakistan in a century. The number of people made homeless by the disaster is thought to be in the hundreds of thousands.

UK charities are involved in an international relief effort. You can help quake survivors by making a donation or by raising funds through an online fundraising page. It takes just minutes to create a page and email it out to friends, family and colleagues. They can then donate in support of your personal appeal by debit or credit card, 24 hours a day, from anywhere in the world.

DEC Asia Quake Appeal
We need your help to support the survivors whose homes and lives have been devastated. This earthquake has wiped out entire villages and at least 20,000 people are feared dead, with many more injured and without shelter. Pakistan is worst hit, but parts of India and Afghanistan are also affected.

The International Rescue Committee
The International Rescue Committee's immediate assistance will include providing tents, blankets, milk, water and energy biscuits to affected families and counseling to traumatised survivors. In addition to its immediate relief capability, the IRC is well-known for linking its emergency response to longer-term relief and rehabilitation efforts.

These activities include rehabilitation of water and sanitation facilities and healthcare. The IRC is well-placed to respond quickly to the disaster in Pakistan as it is one of the largest and longest-serving aid organisations in the country having first arrived in 1980 to aid Afghan refugees fleeing the Soviet invasion. As recently as last month, the IRC rehabilitated water and sanitation facilities to flood-affected communities in Hangu District and in March-May, in cooperation with the World Food Program and USAID, carried out a successful emergency response project for those affected by severe flooding in the same North West Frontier Province area which is now the centre of the disastrous earthquake.

Islamic Relief
The worst affected area is Bagh where most buildings have collapsed, including Islamic Relief's office there. The roads to Bagh are blocked by landslides. Islamic Relief staff in Rawalakot report that 90% of the town has been destroyed, leaving at least 30,000 people homeless. In Pakistan's North-Western Province, the bodies of 400 children were pulled out of the rubble of two schools that collapsed during the earthquake. Thousands of people have lost their homes in the disaster and their immediate needs are blankets and tents.

HOPE Worldwide
We are working near Balakot in the Mansehra district. Thousands are injured and because of the cold, many will die. 50% of homes were destroyed and 75% of schools. There is malaria and cholera in the area. HOPE worldwide is supplying blankets, food, medical care, and whatever people need as time goes on. We are delivering on the ground with local volunteers, as well as some from Lahore, but mostly Pathans, who speak the language and know the people. We desperately need money and shipments!

Plan International
Plan is an international's children charity which has been working since 1997 in the Mansehra District - near the epicentre of the quake. Plan swiftly responded to the needs of the families affected by the earthquake on Saturday 8th October 2005. Plan programme personnel were immediately on the ground assessing the casualties, damage and needs of the communities. We began discussions with international and local humanitarian organisations on how best to coordinate the relief effort. Plan is currently dispatching emergency food, medical supplies, tents of tarpualins, blankets and clothes. Plan is also airlifting injuired villagers from isolated villages in the Mansehra District to the district capital for emergency medical treatment. Plan has launched a worldwide appeal to raise funds to assist the children and their families and help them rebuild their lives. Your contribution is making a real difference to these families.

Friends of The Citizens Foundation
FTCF are implementing a two-phased strategy to provide systematic relief to the survivors of the earthquake in the Northern Areas and Azad Kashmir:
  • Immediate relief: Provision of basic care packages including tents, blankets and food rations to 20,000 affected people for the first week, for which Pak Rs. 30 Million (approx. £300,000) was set aside.
  • Longer term relief: In this second phase we plan to construct 5,000 permanent seismically designed homes each costing Pak Rs. 400,000 (approx £4,000). This programme will have a limited time frame of 2 years.
Regular updates on what is happening with TCF's relief effort, and details of how your donations are being used are available at http://www.tcfrelieffund.org/.
