Antecedentes

My brother Peter and I are raising funds to support the purchase of an oboe for his most high potential student. We are going to do a series of events until we have raised enough money to purchase it.

The ABC Trust has very kindly agreed to support us in raising money and transfering it to a charity in Brazil which will purchase the instrument.

For the first event, Steve did the Camberley Caper on 16/10/11 with two friends - it involved it's 10k running, 25km moutain biking and 1k kayaking. Details here.

For the second event, Steve is doing Hellrunner on 26/11/11. Details here

For the third event, both Steve and Pete are doing Knacker Cracker on New Year's Day 2012. Details here

Background

Since 1998, Peter Apps, has been playing the oboe for the Sao Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, OSESP. It is one of the largest and best known orchestras in South America. Alongside his professional playing, he also teaches. One of his teaching projects is with Instituto Baccarelli, a charity which supports musical talent from disadvantaged backgrounds. He teaches a number of children aged between 6 and 18.

Let me introduce Geysiane Oliviera. She is 10 years old and has been studying with Pete since she was 6. She lives in the neighbourhood of Heliopolis, the closest favela (shanty town) to the centre of Sao Paulo. She lives on the second floor of a very small basic house with her parents and two siblings. Since beginning her studies at Bacarrelli she has had a dream to be a teacher of the arts. She likes to paint and keep pets. She also has displayed a talent for playing the oboe and Peter was always impressed since their first lesson with her ability to concentrate and focus on the exercises given to her. From the age of 6 until 9 she had to go to practice every day at the Institute because she didn’t have her own instrument.

Then at the end of her 9th year, her mother had a surprise in store for her. During the previous 3 years, her mother had been selling cakes at a small booth on the street in Heliopolis and had saved up the sum of 3000 Reais (around $1600) to buy her first instrument. With this money it was possible to buy her a children’s beginners model from an oboe maker in Germany (a special oboe designed for young children with small hands). The day that the oboe arrived, Geysiane described as one of the happiest days of her life. Having her own instrument, Geysiane´s development has been impressive to the point that she requires a superior oboe.

"In my opinion, since the oboe is so notoriously difficult to master, a student who is dedicated and shows such an interest must be provided with the best possible instrument available." Peter Apps

Geysiane dreams of becoming a professional oboe player and we want to help make that dream a reality. With your help, we can do just that.

If you support this cause, we promise to keep you up-to-date with Geysiane's progress over the coming years.

Thank you

Steve and Peter Apps
