We all have a story about things that have changed our lives.....THIS IS MY STORY....
In September 2011 I went to my GP feeling tired and run down. I put it down to a combination of my age, stress at work and becoming a new dad. After numerous tests I went to my appointment in the local hospital and thought they would tell me to take it easier at my age. My life changed when I was told I had Cancer. I had mixed emotions on how and when I could tell my friends and family....or should I even tell them?
I wanted to be in control of my situation so I visited my local Cancer Care Unit in Velindre Hospital in Cardiff and then The Cancer Research Centre to gather anything and everything I needed to know. The staff at both were fantastic, but afterwards it really made me think how lucky I was....I could be treated....many are not so lucky and are being 'made comfortable'.
It was time for 'THE CHAT '........I have 3 sons, one 24, one 19 and a new little man of 3. The look on my older boys faces when I told them will haunt me for the rest of my days.....the little one just wanted to know if I could play trains......again. I adore and idolise my boys and I felt I had let them down and needed to get through this for them, and be around to bore them even more.
Next I had to tell my friends....My plan was to keep it lighthearted and not show any fear. I think most saw through it though. Initially I found it rather amusing how ill informed and naive they were about their own health issues. Then I realised that one of them might have to have 'THE CHAT ' so I needed to do something to make them more aware. The more people that found out, the better, even if it made me feel uncomfortable and vulnerable.
I love all sports but I was at the back of the queue when BIG G handed out talent. However, trying got me fit and the idea of raising money, awareness, and getting back to fitness after my diagnosis seemed perfect. I am new to fundraising with only 2 events completed so far....The London 10k and a funrun at my local rugby club....Rhiwbeina RFC.... with a shirt signing and auction, supported by the Welsh Rugby Captain Sam Warburton, who played for the club. These raised over £1,500. I cannot thank Sam, Rachael (his partner) and his family enough for all the support they have given me.
In the year I have lived with my cancer statistics show 2,437 have had to have 'THE CHAT '. With this in mind, and a great love of doing sit ups and my new love of running, I have untaken the challenge of doing 2,437 sit ups in one session. I will then run the London Marathon......I will be the one running doubled over in pain.
I want to finish by thanking the people around me that have put up with me and supported me during this time.....My partner and her mum, my amazing boys, my sisters and family, all my mates...you know who you are, my second family...the Stellas in La Gaffe in Hampstead...best food and great company. My workplace...Radley.....a huge part of my life, great people and great fun.... thank you. And Bannatynes in Llanishen for the help and support for my event...Thank you to all.
Please help me to help someone not to have ...'THE CHAT '.
THANK YOU AND TAKE CARE.
