My story

Well..... my Greta North Run 2012 didn't go as planned - didn't go at all actually!!

Thanks to an ankle injury (which is currently being investigated...) I couldn't take part in the run this year BUT I am guaranteed a place in the 2013 run so I will be back training as soon as I'm fixed!

To those of you who sponsored me for 2012 - thanks SO much, please consider your donation as being a year in advance!

Here's 'my' story....

Imagine your gorgeous, funny, perfectly healthy little boy catches a cold just days after his first birthday. It then turns to pneumonia which results in a fairly scary stay in hospital so he can be hooked up to oxygen and a feeding tube. Bad enough eh? Well now imagine that weeks later, after numerous medicines and tests, being told that your beautiful baby had actually contracted a post infective disease that has destroyed one of his lungs and a third of his other one. That lungs do not regenerate. That he is at the severe end of the spectrum and will now need oxygen 24/7 for the forseeable future. That very little is known about this rare disease called Obliterative Bronchiolitis (OB), but best case scenario is that he won’t get any worse….

This all happened to a very good friends of mine, Fiona and Duncan Phin and their fantastic son William, in December 2010, and it’s why I’m running the Great North 10K in July and the Great North Run (13.1 miles) in September this year. I’m hoping to raise some money for the Breathtakers charity that has supported the Phin family on their journey so far.

Very little research has been carried out into OB to date, and this is where Breathtakers are trying to help. Please read more about the charity to the right...

As OB is such a rare lung condition, the doctors are unable to give the Phin family any long term advice on how William will cope with this as he gets older. He is on oxygen constantly (which brings its own set of challenges), regular check ups at Newcastle’s RVI, daily physio to help his lungs clear mucus, and regular antibiotics to try and avoid him catching infections that he is at a higher risk of catching. At night William is put on a non-invasive ventilator which helps him to breath more easily.

As for William's future, the Phin family take this day by day, month by month.  It has been a year since his diagnosis and he has coped very well in that time, he’s a happy, clever, chirpy little boy and never fails to make me laugh! Fiona and Duncan make sure that he has a better social life than most 2 year olds I know, he gets out and about all over and has a lot of fun! I'm sure he will not let this beat him, and your donation could help him get as much out of life as he possibly can.

Please dig deep and donate what you can to this VERY worthy cause.... thank you.
