Travelling to South Africa and teaching abroad has been my dream for years, and now that I am graduating from University (a scary thought in itself!) I am grabbing the proverbial bull by the horns and going for it! As soon as I have raised enough funds to be able to support myself I plan to go to Port Elizabeth, South Africa to work with The Oliver Foundation as a volunteer teacher. The reason for my creating this page is so that I can have a central base for my fundraising for this fantastic charity - don't worry, the money that is raised and donated on this website will go directly to the Oliver Foundation, I am covering my flights, accomodation etc myself!
The work that the charity does out there is essential, working in the poorer areas of Port Elizabeth to promote education and provide children with the resources that they so desperately need to attend school, which, in turn gives them the skills they need to give themselves the best possible chance at a better life. The Oliver Foundation has just finished building the Zama Children's Library which gives the children at the Zama afterschool club access to books, helping them to further their knowledge of the English language, giving them access to resources that we take for granted.
But that is just one of the many projects that the Oliver Foundation is involved in; their mission statement reflects the charity's all-encompassing goals as;
The Oliver Foundation is committed to creating a meaningful and sustainable impact in under-resourced communities, primarily in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, focusing on empowering disadvantaged and vulnerable people to create personal self-sustainability. The Foundation focuses on creating a catalyst of change within the local community through developing and supporting programmes which have a social, environmental, educational and economic impact on those lives it touches. Our aim is to make a real difference to the participants and, where possible, also to their extended families.
To give you an idea of how far the money we raise will go, I have a few figures for you. It costs just 8p to feed a child, and by donating £100 you give the child the access to school for one year that they so desperately want, as you provide them with the funds for a uniform (without one they cannot attend school), shoes, school fees, rucksacks and pens. a further £100 added to this means that the Oliver Foundation can provide the child with the Zama Afterschool club alongwith an occasional meal, so whether its 10p that is donated or a tenner, every little bit counts!
So thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page, and if you could donate to this fantastic charity, even if it's just a few pounds that would be absolutely fantastic!
