My story

In Honour of Ellis Harriet Clark and to raise money for her worthy cause 15 brave souls will take part in one of the world’s most unique ‘races’ The Tough Guy Winter Challenge http://www.toughguy.co.uk/

Team Sloppy Seconds

Gareth Pickard, Darren Hodges, Martin Reynolds, Colin Bones, Lee Browne, Martin Walford, Peter Edwards, Gary Hodges, Dan Pope, Nathan Howe, Chris Hobbs, Stuart Dominy, James Oliver, Pierre Gosselin,
Jon Salmon.

Sloppy because this challenge is mud, mud, mud....some more mud with a mud chaser.

Seconds because 2 of the team have been through this ordeal before......

The veterans and the new recruits will march, run, hobble, swim and crawl onto the Icy battlefields on 29 January 2012.

Quote from Gareth (Team Captain)

“I did this event last year and Tough Guy is truly a formidable challenge. Our team will endure: hypothermic temperatures while being plunged into ice encrusted lakes and rivers. Burns and scalds while leaping through burning bales of straw. Electric shocks while crawling through semi submerged sewer pipes. Cuts and bruises from the barbed wire and truly gargantuan obstacles that must be overcome.... and all throughout an 8 mile cross country run on extremely arduous terrain. I couldn’t think of a more fitting challenge to honour our memory of Ellis and her charity”

Aged just twelve years old, Ellis was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma which is the most common form of bone cancer. Just one month after her 16th Birthday, Ellis lost her battle against this disease.

In memory of Ellis, the Ellis Harriet Clark Foundation http://www.ellisharrietclark.org/ was founded with the aim of making the lives of children suffering with cancer a little easier. The foundation works very closely with http://www.teenagecancertrust.org/ and http://scatbonecancertrust.org/ on this ocassion we will be purely supporting Skeletal Cancer Action Trust.

What is Tough Guy?

Taking place at the end of January, often in freezing winter conditions, the Tough Guy race is staged over a course of between seven and eight miles (about 12 kilometres). It consists of a cross-country run with over 75 Obstacles, Ditched Steeple Chased, Fell, Logged, Muck and & Mush followed by an assault course tougher than any other worldwide. The organizers claim that running the course involves risking barbed wire, cuts, scrapes, burns, dehydration, hypothermia, acrophobia, claustrophobia, electric shocks, sprains, twists, joint dislocation and broken bones.

Although the course is adjusted each year, its features have included a 40-foot (12.2 meters) crawl through flooded underground tunnels, balancing planks across a fire pit, and a half-mile wade through chest-deep muddy water. Marshals dressed as commandos fire Amphibious Tank Gun blanks and let off thunder flashes and smoke bombs over the heads of competitors as they crawl under a 70-meter section of barbed wire.

Before taking part, entrants must sign a "death warrant", which acknowledges the risks and dangers, and which the organizers claim absolves them of any legally liability in the case of injury. Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
