Channel Swim · 24 August 2009

NASS is only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting people with axial spondyloarthritis (AS), a painful, progressive rheumatic disease which mainly affects the spine. An estimated 200,000 people live with AS in the UK. Our 90+ branches across the UK offer regular exercise to anyone with AS.

Story

Channel swimming: 23.69 land miles or 40km from Dover, England to Cap Griz Nez, France. 15.5 degrees in the water, two of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, weather, waves, tide, cold...  Towards the end of August, a friend and I are attempting a tag-team crossing of the English Channel, one in/one out, taking it in turns until we reach the other side. I have no doubt this will be the hardest thing I have ever done- the training has exposed me to new levels of cold and exhaustion not to mention the boredom of staring at tiles at the bottom of the pool for hours at a time!

If you feel you can sponsor me in this endeavor I would be most grateful.  I am raising money for NASS: National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society.  AS is a form of rheumatoid arthritis affecting many of the joints in the body.  The disease can be extremely painful, debilitating and in the long-term crippling.  With the correct diagnosis, treatment and exercise, the affects can be mitigated and in some cases, turned back and sufferers can live a very normal life.  NASS provides information and advice to patients to bring about the best possible outcome for the individual concerned.
