Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Team Amec are doing THE MONSTER again!

Last years’ team members; Jim Watson, Callum Easton & Scott McArthur are being joined by 3 newbies to the event: Katy Marples, Iain Anderson & Steve Gardiner.

As usual the team will be ably supported by John & Leigh Bonthrone and will also be joined this year by Monika Niedbalska & Tom Cairns.

Bigger event team and bigger support team, so we are looking for bigger sponsorship - please!!

The team have once again come to my (John's) call for help to put their bodies on the line in undertaking this gruelling challenge. It took the team 22 hours to complete the course last year - which was no mean feat given some dodgy weather conditions. Here's a wee bit about why they are again agreeing to do it with words kindly written by a third party -

John has fought an inspirational battle with the diagnosis, treatment & recovery from Osteosarchoma, a form of bone cancer. The severity of major life threatening operations to remove a massive tumour from his spine & ribs left John unable to walk.

His resolve to recover has meant not only that he has learnt to walk again but has returned to full time work, and despite physical impairment, has taken up cycling (in support of his team) & has recently got back on his Motorcycle. This is the journey he has been on since 2008, using Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres help, in addition to dedicated family support from his wife Amber and daughter Leigh, plus huge personal resilience & determination.

In doing this challenge we are showing our support to John who is now fully committed to fundraising for Maggie’s (Aberdeen & Fife) and through the Maggie’s network to help other individuals & families going through cancer to better understand their situation & learn to cope & access support.

John was nominated as a Torchbearer during the London 2012 Olympic Flame Torch Relay by the Monty's Maggie’s Appeal Committee in Aberdeen for exemplifying the Olympic values of Excellence, Respect & Friendship.

So, what is the Maggie's Monster Bike & Hike? - The route starts at Neptune's Staircase (Banavie), 3 miles North West of Fort William and follows the Great Glen Way up to Inverness.

The challenge starts with everyone cycling 31.5 miles from Neptune's Staircase to Fort Augustus where there is a changeover from bike to boots - and the hike begins. For us this will be a 41.2 mile hike to Inverness to the GOLD finish.

Hopefully we will be there at some point late on the Saturday or more likely early on the Sunday!
