Much "fun" was had by a couple of thousand Santas running in rain, wind and sun, in Greenwich Park! Proof that Santa suits are neither waterproof or dye-fast... lots of red, not all within the fabric!
Race report: I ran 5 km in just over "a Beethoven's 8th" - according to the cd data this is 25.56. The 8th is a chirpy little number, perfect for this sort of thing. Initially I was overtaken by numerous Santas who thought that the run was a 500m event, but running at a modest even pace allowed rapid revenge, and the uphill sections were particularly morale-boosting. The cunning organisers saved a1km uphill stretch for the 4th km, which surprised a few red-suited, red-faced folk!
Gear review: Trainers are never waterproof. "Design Go" waterproof walkman case works really well. Pentax Optio W60 camera is waterproof and works really well, but only when you remember to take photos! Old gortex jacket is no longer waterproof, shame (big grin - will have to go to a gear shop before next Bhutan trip, March 20th 2010!!!).
Venue review: Excellent tea opportunities. As Our Father taught us "tea makes pee" (he really did teach me and my sister this!!), and portaloos are pretty good for sheltering from torrential rain.
Personal report: Thank you all so very much for your donations. I am thrilled to have raised this money for St Joseph's, who I know from experience do difficult and much-needed work. I know 5 km was not far to run, so in honour of your generosity, I ran from my home in Hackney to the race venue in Greenwich, which was another 10 km.
THANK YOU ALL. S&T
