What is the Terry Hope Feeding Project?

The Terry Hope Feeding centre was the first project taken on by the Order of Malta Embassy in Kenya when it began operating in July 2008. Until that time the project was run by Terry Stobbs in response to a request for help from her friends, Lydia and George, who live close to Githembe Slum. They explained to Terry that there were many orphans living with extended family members (aunts, uncles, grandparents) and these foster homes were struggling to feed the additional children on their already stretched finances. Consequently the children were undernourished and underdeveloped both physically and mentally.

Terry was immediately able to alleviate the situation to some degree by knitting teddy bears that she then sold to generate income to buy the porridge. Since the early days Terry has been able to teach some of the local ladies to knit and this has increased the income.

In late 2008 Lydia’s grandmother donated a small plot of land to the project and in early 2009 a basic building was constructed on the site, funded by the Order of Malta Embassy in Kenya. This provides a large permanent room for the children and a smaller room where the porridge and meals are prepared.

Achievements

The Terry Hope Feeding Project now provides daily nutritious meals to 75 orphans.

It provides a safe and fun environment for the children and is somewhere they know they will always be welcomed with smiles and open arms.

The project is run thanks to efficient management and committed staff and volunteers.

Attendance and impact is high as the project successfully meets the nutritional needs of the children.

Urgent Need

The major obstacle to this project’s survival, growth and sustainability is the lack of safe drinking water facilities on site. The Terry Hope Feeding Project is currently without any access to safe water. There is a serious drought situation in Kenya due to a lack of significant rain since autumn 2008; the usual spring rains did not materialise.

Until recently we were able to purchase water from a seller within the slum close to the project, but this facility has now ceased and without transport they are unable to collect water from any distance. The result is that on occasion the porridge cannot be prepared with safe water.

Contaminated water is responsible for harbouring life threatening diseases such as dysentery, cholera, typhoid and e-coli, salmonella and cryptosporidium as well as parasitic worms such as guinea worm, hook worm and bilharzias. The situation could quickly become critical for these children, as recent statistics show that 60% of hospital visits in East Africa are as a direct result of water-borne disease. Tragically, as many as 5,000 children a day die as a result of ingesting contaminated water.

The Terry Hope Feeding Project urgently needs to obtain funding towards the cost of installing a Meckow Aquapur system - a unique water purification system - to enable project sustainability and future development.
