The Sucata Run is a fundraising Banger Rally we decided to take part in after the tragic death of my father. You don't need to have an expensive ride, be a mechanic, or even be into cars at all but it helps!!!! All we need is our sense of adventure, humour and possibly a compass.
Taking place over the August Bank Holiday (26th - 30th) 2010.We will try and coax our multi-coloured scrapheap from Rouen (the historic capital of Normandy and site of Joan of Arc's final bow) to Cabo da Roca in Portugal; Europe's most westerly point. After passing through the vineyards of bordeaux, the twists and turns of the Pyrenees and the beautiful coastline of Spain, the rally culminates in a sunset beach party over looking the Atlantic and a prize giving ceremony where the team who raised the most money walks away with a luxury holiday for 6 in the Algarve.
Sounds Idyllic doesn’t it well there is a catch we have to reach there in a car worth no more than £250 .We have aquired a 1997 Toyota Corolla for the grand sum of £1.It has only just passed the 100,000 mile mark and with some TLC we hope it can take us the 1952 miles.
With the money raised by Sucata Run 2010 Gemin-i.org are planning to run a project to raise awareness of Malaria. Students from over 100 schools around the globe will be able to explore the topic using the case study of Sierra Leone, where it is the biggest killer of children under five. They will explore the reasons why so many people still die from malaria and what is being done by humanitarian aid agencies to prevent this.
Through participation in this project, young people will be able to join the global effort against malaria. They will hear stories of how governments and aid organizations are fighting the disease, they will talk to other children in affected regions, and they will be given the opportunity to design their own awareness raising campaign on the theme of malaria prevention.
Each £1000 raised by teams taking part in this event will pay for five schools to take part in the project. The more schools that we can involve, the bigger an impact we can have around the world
