Story

The Hunger Project's (THP's) Microfinance Programme is a training, savings and credit programme that addresses a critical missing link for the end of hunger in Africa: the economic empowerment of the most important but least supported food producers on the continent - Africa's women.

Since its inception in 1999, THP has enabled almost 15,000 partners in 40 communities in Ghana to increase their incomes and invest in their businesses. This allows them to pay their children's school fees, purchase medicines or build new homes. In addition, 3 communities now operate their own independent, community-owned and women-led Rural Banks.

Mina Adu-Taah is a divorcee with 6 children from Bompata in Ghana, who before she came into contact with The Hunger Project-Ghana, could hardly stand in front of people.

"Not only has my financial status improved, but my status in the area has also improved significantly. This is because I stood for last year's elections and won as the first female assembly member in the area. This feat is attributed to the training, especially the encouragement of women to be leaders even if they may not have any formal education. I have a change of mindset towards womanhood. I now know that women can also do even better than their male counterparts".

£4,000 can provide loans and training for 100 women and 500 of their family members, (but will go on to help more women as the money is reinvested once paid back). An important benefit is the women’s empowerment - they report improved self-confidence, respect from others and increased decision-making power; leadership skills enable programme participants to run for their local councils.

You can play a part in training and empowering these women and having a lasting effect on their community.
