Thomas was diagnosed with Perthes disease in his left hip in may 2010.
Perthes disease is when the blood supply to the hip joint stops and causes the hip joint to crumble. The joint becomes painful and stiff,and as the joint deteriorates, the leg shortens. Eventually, the blood supply will start again and the bone will regrow.
In Tom's case, he was told that he must not put any weight on his left leg and that he was to use a wheelchair.
Thomas was a very active 8 year old who enjoyed football, gymnastics , trampolining and running around with his friends. However, he has coped fantastically well and now swims several times a week and plays wheelchair basketball.
The Perthes Association were really helpful and provided us with a suitable wheelchair within a couple of days. As a thank you, Tom and his friends are doing a sponsored swim on March 27th at the Xcel Leisure Centre from 2 - 4.
