Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On Thursday March 15th I will attempt to ride The Way of the Roses in one go. It's a Sustrans route which starts in Morecambe on the West coast and finishes in Bridlington on the East coast. It's 170 miles long and includes 5000 ft of climbing. I will be riding with Chris Hickson who runs Bicycle Buddy, a Doncaster based mobile bike workshop.

So why am I doing it I hear you ask! Well the inspiration for this challenge is The Big Pedal, Sustrans' virtual inter school bike race which takes place each year. This year over 1000 schools are taking part and 17 of those are schools which I work with in Doncaster. It works a bit like the Tour De France in that each day of the race is a new stage following a different Sustrans route around the UK. Schools encourage pupils, parents and staff to cycle or scoot to school each day and the more that do, the faster their time will be for each stage of the race.

Thursday the 15th of March is stage 9 of The Big Pedal, The Way of the Roses, and I thought what better way of encouraging the children in my schools to cycle to school than to do that stage (which is the closest stage to Doncaster) in real time. My rationale is that if I can cycle 170 miles in a day then surely it can't be too hard to get your bike out of the shed and cycle to school. I'm hoping for record numbers of bikes in Doncaster schools on that day!
